The fall of the communist regime in Albania resulted – among other things – in massive migration flows particularly towards Greece. The strategies of adaptation of Albanians in Greece are worth exploring for they involve a set of interesting – though unusual – practices; first, a persistent name (and, in some cases, religion) changing, then, a gradual devaluation of the mother tongue by the youngest generations. Besides, Albanian households’ broad diffusion into the urban space together with the absence of any ethicised district within the Greek city bring about a spatial invisibility of the Albanians as a group. This book will focus on the exploration of these phenomena, on the conditions under which they were generated, as well as on their consequences. We suggest that the above practices are the various components of a single coping strategy of Albanian migrants in Greece. We try to demonstrate also that the strategies in question are the result of a multiplicity of factors related both to the culture of the newcomers (and, thus, the country of departure) as well as to the general social climate and the migration policies in Greece (so, also, to the immigration country).

Les migrations des Albanais en Grèce, amorcées suite à la chute du régime communiste en Albanie en 1991, peuvent être qualifiées d'exceptionnelles aussi bien par leur intensité et leur importance arithmétique que par l'évolution particulière des migrants, qui entreprennent quelques pratiques peu "habituelles": d'une part, une dissimulation identitaire, qui passe par le changement de prénom et/ou de religion; d'autre part, une invisibilité spatiale en tant que groupe, essentiellement traduite par la diffusion de leurs ménages dans le territoire urbain grec, et par l'absence de quartiers ethnicisés. Ce livre s'intéressera à l'exploration de ces phénomènes, les conditions sous lesquelles ils ont été générés, aussi bien que leurs conséquences. Pour notre part, nous proposons que ces phénomènes forment les diverses composantes d'une même stratégie d'adaptation des migrants albanais en Grèce. Nous nous efforçons, en outre, de démontrer que les stratégies en question sont la conséquence d'une multiplicité des facteurs liés tant à la culture des nouveaux-arrivants et donc au pays de départ, qu'au climat social général et aux politiques migratoires en Grèce, donc au pays d'immigration.
